Abstract
LITTLE is known about the orientation of substitution in alkylfluorenes, and, as several fluorene derivatives have now been isolated as natural products, a study has been made of some substitution reactions of l-methylfluorene. As fluorene itself is substituted exclusively in the %position, it might be thought that l-methylfluorene would give 1,2-disubstituted derivatives, unless steric hindrance is an important factor, in which case 1,7- disubstituted derivatives would be expected.
