Abstract

An investigation of the reaction of molecular oxygen with benzyl-type carbanions in dimethyl sulfoxide (80%) and t-butyl alcohol (20%) solutions led to the conclusion that the reaction products often resulted from condensation of the initially formed aldehydes with the starting toluenes.* We have therefore studied, in the absence of oxygen, the reaction of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution ...
