Abstract

1-( j3-Naphthoy1)-fluorene was the chief product of the reaction of 14.5 g. of fluorene-1-carboxylic acid chloride with 9 g. of naphthalene, and 9.2 g. of aluminum chloride in 300 cc. of tetrachloroethane, the mixture being initially at 5-10', then at room temperature. The crude ketone was heated with acetone and alkali in order to hydrolyze unchanged acid chloride, 3.9 g. of acid being recovered after distilling the solvent and extracting the ketone with ether- benzene. ...
