Abstract: Rates and isotope effects are reported for benzylic hydron exchange and dehydrofluorination reactions of C6H5CiHC1CF3 (I) and C6H5CiH (CF3) 2 (11) in alcoholic sodium alkoxide solutions. Reactions of I were studied in ethanol and isotope effects are reported at 75 OC:(kH/kD), ch= 1.06,(kH/kD), li,= 1.04, and (kEtoD/kEtoH)= 2.3. Exchange occurs 9-10 times faster than does elimination.
