Abstract

Diabetes mellitus may be divided into two major subdivisions.'People with type I diabetes have little or no circulating insulin and require daily insulin injections to prevent ketoacidosis and death. In contrast, type I1 diabetics are often insulin resistant and, although having circulating insulin levels which are measurable, they have basal insulin levels and/or insulin secretory responses which are usually abnormal.
