Abstract
The synthesis of alkyl aryl ketones using lithiated methyl mandelate as a synthetic equivalent of the benzoyl carbanion is reported (Umpolung). The methodology involves alkylation of methyl mandelate, hydrolysis of the ester group and oxidative decarboxylation of the resulting α-hydroxyacids.
