Abstract
Recently the halogenation of alkanes and alkenes by halide ions and ButOOH in a pyridine-acetic acid medium, catalysed by Fe"1 salts (Gif reaction), has been the subject of different interpretations. We1 explain these halogenations by a mechanism involving ButO. and alkyl radicals, while Barton and coworkers2 exclude the involvement of free radicals suggesting organo-FeV intermediates.
