Abstract

Chemotherapeutic agents must be able to kill tumor cells while being inactive against healthy cells. Typically, a prodrug is activated in situ by some mild mechanism and generates an aggressive intermediate that may for example, abstract hydrogen atoms from DNA and induce DNA cleavage and subsequent apoptosis.
