Abstract

• The organophosphorus insecticide diazinon (DZ) and its active metabolite diazoxon (DZO) inhibit neurite outgrowth in rat hippocampal neurons. • Both compounds increase oxidative stress in neurons. • Neurite outgrowth inhibition is prevented by antioxidants, including glutathione. • Astrocytes protect against neurite outgrowth inhibition by regulating neuronal glutathione. • Astrocytes depleted of glutathione no longer prevent DZ- or DZO-induced inhibition.
