Abstract

Formyl reagents to provide the additional carbon atom were tested in the model cyclisation of a-phenyl-o-hydroxy- acetophenone (Scheme 1, la). Many common inorganic and organic bases were also investigated. The results are listed in Table 1. The results in Table 1 show that inorganic bases including NaOAc, NaOH, K2C03 (entries 8, 9 and 10) showed poor reactivity.
