Results Chemistry. The method of synthesis of the carbostyril derivatives (Scheme I) was based on Goodman's approach to the synthesis of catecholamine derivatives. 11J6 Commercial 8-hydroxyquinoline was converted by aqueous formaldehyde-hydrogen chloride to the hydrochloride of 5-(chloromethyl)-8-hydroxyquinoline, which, by treatment with aqueous ammonia, yielded B-hydroxy-5-(hydroxymethy1) quinoline (1).
