Abstract

Clean sulfenylations are observed upon reaction of activated methylenes with phenyl succinimidyl sulfide. When working with diethyl benzylmalonate, the sulfenylated product can be selectively oxidized and thermally fragmented affording phenylsulfenic acid, initially, and diethyl benzylidenemalonate.
