Abstract
Sir: Ketenes 1 can be synthesized by a variety of methods.' However, yields are often mediocre, the solutions some- times contaminated with other products, or the reactions not suitable for small-scale preparations (ketene itself). We have found that the reaction of pentacarbonylmanganate anion (2) with a-bromoacyl chlorides (or bromides) unexpectedly leads in good yield to ketenes or with viny- logous y-bromo compounds to vinyl ketenes. ...
