Abstract
Hexoses have been prepared in a practical manner by the partial reduction of polyhydroxy-y- lactones with sodium amalgam1 This partial reduction fails when applied to non- hydroxylated lactones. 2 Lithium aluminum hydride3 in excess reduces saturated y-and &lactones to 1, 4-and 1, 5-diols, respectively.
