Abstract
We have recently shown1 that cobalt(r1) chloride efficiently catalyses the acylation of thiols, alcohols, and amines in very high yields. In an attempt to acylate an aldehyde with acetic anhydride in the presence of cobalt(I1) chloride we observed the unusual formation of unsymmetrical 1,2-diones in very high yields.
