Abstract: The reaction of phenyl radicals with t-butyl sulfide and phenyl t-butyl sulfide was carried out by decomposing phenylazotriphenylmethane in dilute solution in the sulfides. Reactions were run in the absence and in the presence of air. In the absence of air, benzene and isobutylene are formed in equivalent amounts, indicating quantitative, nonchain, free- radical elimination reactions.
