Discussion The stabilization of carbanions by the inductive and pd overlap effects of an adjacent phosphorus atom has provided a class of P-ylids which have been shown to provide one of the most useful carbon-carbon bond forming reactions.'In the same manner as phosphorus, sulfur may also expand its valence shell utilizing 3d orbitals to stabilize an adjacent carbanion.
