Abstract

Primary alkyl Grignard reagents react regioselectively with diketene in the presence of cobalt (II) iodide to afford 3-methylenealkanoic acids in good yields. The synthetic utility of this reaction is demonstrated in the syntheses of terpenoids by two methods.
