Abstract
Nitration~ nd bromination of some trimethinium salts and a pentamethinium salt has been studied along with ultraviolet spectra of the products obtained. Structure of the nitro derivatives has been established by cyclisation to heterocyclic compounds. In ultraviolet spectra of some 2-substituted trimethinium salts, a shift of absorption maxima to longer wave- lengths occurs which is probably due to a steric effect.
