Abstract

A convenient synthesis of 1, 2-benzisothiazole 1, 1-dioxide from toluene--sulphonamide is reported, and this allows the preparation of a number of 1, 2-benzothiazepine 1, 1-dioxides bearing hydrogen atoms in the seven-membered ring; H nmr spectroscopy suggests that the later is not aromatic.
