Abstract

Eleven methyl-substituted 1-phenylcyclohexanols and the unsubstituted parent compound have been synthesized and arranged in the order of their dehydration rates in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid under identical conditions. Evidence is presented which demonstrates that carbon skeleton rearrangements do not occur during dehydration.
