Abstract

Thermal scission of the allylic carbon-carbon bond of cyclobutenes to give 1, 3-dienes has been observed in a sufficient number of cases to suggest that it is a general reaction. A number of recently reported examples have been summarized by Vogel. 2 In contrast to the ease of cleavage noted in the hydrocarbon series, hexafluorocyclobutene is resistant to thermal isomerization.
