Abstract

Synthesis of small quantities of substituted phenanthrenes by photocyclization of stilbenes in the presence of an oxidant is the method of ch0ice. l Since the procedure does not lead to rearrangement of the substituents, this route is also recommended for the preparation of authentic samples of known structure.
