Abstract
Mercury substitution ortho to appropriately activated benzenes was achieved by using the reagent lithium tetramethylpiperidide (LiTMP)/mercuric chloride. LiTMP provides for lithiation ortho to the activating group; HgC12 functions as an in situ trap effecting mercury-for-lithium transmetalation.
