Abstract
Current theories of substituent effects have been based in the main on infor- mation derived from studies of benzene derivatives and, to a lesser extent, aliphatic compounds. Considerable clarification has resulted from the observation of linear free energy correlations1 through which parameters quantitatively describing the polar effects of substituents can be derived.
