Abstract
The sesquiterpenes cuparanes and herbertanes are interesting synthetic targets owing to the presence of a sterically crowded 1-aryl-1,2,2-trimethylcyclopentane moiety, and the difficulty associated with the construction of vicinal quaternary carbon atoms on a cyclopentane ring.
