Abstract: NMR studies and theoretical calculations were performed on nonalternant pericondensed polycyclic systems such as aceheptylene, acenaphthylene, and their charged derivatives. The results point toward a significant tendency of the systems to sustain aromaticity or, if impossible, to avoid antiaromaticity and to become nonaromatic.
