Abstract: The synthesis of 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 24, 25-dodecahydro-18, 2 1- dioxonia-15, 23: 16, 22-dimethenobenzo [1, 2-a: 5, 4-a'] dipentaphene bis ( trifluoromethanesu1fonate)(18) is described. The key intermediate, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10- hexahydropentaphene-l, 12 (2H, l IZ+ dione (6), is prepared in seven steps from 9, lO- dihydrophenanthrene in 32% yield via a double-Haworth synthesis.
