Abstract
The intermediate formed from tetrachloromethane-triphenylphosphine and neopentyl alcohol decomposes bimolecularly in acetonitrile and not unimolecularly as in CDC13. This kinetic order is not consistent with a pericyclic pathway but is consistent with an ion-pair mechanism.
