Abstract

THE isolation of a new antibiotic, fusidic acid, from a strain of Fusidium has recently been rep0rted.l This substance was characterized as an a&unsaturated carboxylic acid, C,,H,O,, containing one acetoxyl and two hydroxyl groups. The presence of an isolated trisubstituted double bond was demonstrated, and it was concluded that fusidic acid contains a tetracyclic ring system.' In this paper, arguments for the assignment of formula I to fusidic acid are presented.
