Abstract

Thermolysis of 5× 10-3 M 3, 3: 4, 4-dibutano-1, 2-dioxetane 2, E a= 25.3±0.3 kcal/mol, Δ S≠= 0±2 eu, in degassed decane solution at 42° C produced a 300: 1 ratio of cyclopentanone 3: 4-pentenal, 4. From the quantum yield of photolysis of 3 to 4, determined to be 0.27 using 313 nm light, it is calculated that 2.5% excited 3 is formed on thermolysis of 2.
