Abstract
Several features of the Hofmann-Loffler reaction relevant to the mechanism have been examined, including stereochemistry, hydrogen isotope effect, initiation, inhibition, catalysis, intermediates and selectivity of hydrogen transfer. The results point conclusively to a free radical chain mechanism involving intramolecular hydrogen transfer as one of the propagation steps.
