Abstract

Summary 1. Two lignin fractions were isolated from barley straw by extracting it successively and exhaustively, first with a 2% alcoholic sodium hydroxide solution at room temperature and then by refluxing with 4% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. All the data agree with the dissected formula ClaHaiOs for the first lignin fraction.
