Abstract

This research is patterned after the observation of Griffiths and Hawkid who found that l- methoxyanthracene-9, lO-dione on photolysis in the presence of primary alkylamines afforded the corresponding 1-(alky-lamino) anthracene-9, 1O-diones. It is generally observed in aromatic nucleophilic photochemical substitutions that the position meta to an electron-withdrawing group is activated relative to the ortho or para positions.
