Abstract

The classification of absorption bands in the acene series (α, p, β-bands) was first based on the annellation effect and later on the polarization of the bands with regard to the molecular axes (Lb, La, Bb, Ba-bands). Both give the same result since annelation axes and molecular axes coincide. This is not so in the pyrene series.
