Abstract
The low reactivity, hazardous nature, and inconvenience of acetylene as a dienophile in the Diels-Alder reaction have led to the development of synthetically equivalent dienophiles, eg p-tolyl ethynyl sulfone,'adducts of which may be reduced to give compounds that are formally Diels-Alder adducts of acetylene.
