Abstract

A silica supported cobalt (II) Salen complex catalyst has been successfully employed in the aerobic oxidation of alkyl aromatics at atmospheric pressure in the presence of N- hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). The reaction is particularly selective for the oxidation of the benzylic CH2 group and the major product obtained was ketone.
