Abstract
The synthesis of (+)-(S)-2-propanol-l-dr from (+)-(3)-lactic acid is described. The asymmetric Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reductions by a number of (S)-alkylmethylcarbinols of ketone I demonstrate the utility of this system as a device for estimating relative kinetic size. Use of (+)-2-propanol-ld, in this asymmetric reduction does not reveal the operation of an isotope effect: methyl and trideuteriomethyl appear to have indistinguishable kinetic sizes by this ...
