Abstract
N-Benzylthieno [3, 2-b] pyrrole (11) has been synthesized in four steps from N-benzylpyrrole in 19% over-all yield; I1 and its precursors are shown to be markedly more stable than the des-benzyl analog I and its precursors. An isomer of 11, formed as a by-product in the polyphosphoric acid cyclization of 3-(I-benzylpyrroly1thio)-acetic acid, is shown by spectral analysis to be 6-benzyl-2H, 3H-thieno [3, 2-b] pyrrol-3-one (VIIa).
