Abstract

In an attempt to prepare 5-benzyl-8-hydroxyquinoline we found that the method of Karst'gave a very poor yield. An improved method was found in a modified Skraup synthesis, starting with o-amino-pbenzylphenol, a compound not previously described. Satisfactory yields of both compounds were obtained. A study of the action of 5-benzyl-8- hydroxyquinoline sulfate on B. coli has revealed that it is superior to 8-hydroxyquinoline ...
