Abstract

The alkali isomerizations of the six p, y-unsaturated phenols I-VI have been compared with that of o-allylphenol. All six are isomerized with greater difficulty than is o-allylphenol and, surprisingly, the ortho isomers are isomerized faster than the corresponding@ ara isomers. The possible mechanisms of isomerization are considered.
