Abstract

Thiocarbonyl ylides can be successfully used in the synthesis of tetrahydrothiophenes.' There are several methods for obtaining thiocarbonyl ylides; 2 however, the mildest conditions are the ones used by Huisgen3 in which a thiocarbonyl compound is treated with diazomethane to yield a thiadiazoline; this extrudes N2 to yield the desired thiocarbonyl ylide (Scheme I).
