Abstract

Hexabenzylhexaazaisowurtzitane (2a) is prepared in a very facile manner by condensation of nearly stoichiometric quantities of benzylamine with 40% aqueous glyoxal in aqueous acetonitrile solvent (15% total water) at 25" C. An acid catalyst (formic acid, 0.1 molar% of the amine) is required. The reaction is rapid and nearly complete within a few hours.
