Abstract: The photochemistry of the three naphthalenemethyl esters, a-and P- naphthalenemethyl phenylacetates (1 and 5) and P-naphthalenemethyl P-naphthylacetate (lo), and two benzyl esters, benzyl a-and P-naphthylacetate (8 and 9), was examined in detail. The photodecarboxylation was shown to proceed by way of the singlet state by sensitization and quenching experiments yielding benzyl or naphthalenemethyl (a or P) ...
