Abstract

The leukotrienes are important mediators of smooth muscle constriction,'increased vascular permeability: and leukocyte hemotaxis.~ The enzyme 5-lipoxygenase catalyzes the initial step in the metabolism of arachidonic acid leading to leukotrienes. Inhibition of the enzyme activity has provided a new therapeutic approach to treating a variety of inflammatory and allergic diseases.
