Abstract
While the chemistry of phenylmalonic acid and its derivatives appears to be rather well studied, the preparation of its phenolic derivatives seems to be limited to that of the methyl ethyl ester of p-hydroxyphenylethylmalonic acid and its methyl ether, 3 which, since no reactive hydrogen is present, are not suitable for further alkylation reactions.
