Abstract

Spraguel obtained the ketol (CH3) 3CC (0) CH2-CHOHCH3 in 68% yield by the hydrogenation of (CH3), CC (0) CH2C (O) CH3. This rather unexpected result was no doubt due to the relative resistance to hydrogenation of a carbonyl group adjacent to a tertiary butyl group.
