Abstract
The dimethyl muconates 4a-c were hydrolyzed to the disodium cis, cis-3-halomuconates la-c with NaOH. These proved to be unstable to purification conditions either by recrystallization or anion-exchange chromatography. The hydrolysis products la-c display vicinal coupling constants similar to those of their dimethyl precursors. Hydrolysis of the dimethyl cis, trans-3- halomuconates 5a-c provides the cis, trans-3-halomuconic acids 6a-c (Scheme 111). In ...
