Abstract Transient metallaphosphenes (rbnd2; M [dbnd] P [sbnd]) have been obtained by exchange reactions between disilylphosphines and organometaldihalides (M= Ge, Sn), or by thermolysis of 2-metallaphosphetanes (M= Si, Ge). They are characterized by trapping reactions with strained heterocycles.
