Abstract

The alternate approach involving construction of rings A and B from a hydrindene derivative has not been previously empl~ yed.~ The 5-substituted hydrindenes which are the major products of the usual aromatic substitution reactions on hydrindene could cyclize in either of two ways. 5 In the present work this alternate approach has been applied by starting with 4- substituted hydridenes, which can cyclize only at the desired position.
